Will You Have Fun?
Back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I was young, whenever my family went out to visit relatives or my parents’ friends during the holidays, we kids would be lumped together with the other kids and instructed to “have fun.”
Granted, it was fine if it was cousins I liked, or even if the kids were roughly the same age as me and not psychopathic. If that was the case, I’d generally have a pretty good time. But if it was the cousin who collected war memorabilia and liked to pull heads off dolls, or the neighbor’s kid who liked to measure the length of his boogers, then not so much.
Even now, after all these years, the directive to ‘have fun’ makes me shudder.
And yes, there is a reason I'm pointing this out, and yes, I probably do sound a bit defensive. But over the weekend, I met someone at a party who said they were thinking of trying out Fish and Bear, and they wanted to know if they'd ‘have fun’, and I was uncharacteristically speechless. I said I knew it was enjoyable, and that it made people happy, and the overwhelming feeling people generally had, was of belonging. And then, because this person had looked at me like I was trying to avoid the issue, I explained how I'd once known a guy whose idea of having fun was to measure the length of his boogers. And then I realized I’d probably overshared because the person quickly found someone they absolutely had to talk to right away.
Anyhoos, I suppose what I discovered was that, though I know Fish and Bear does really work, I find it tricky to describe. I like to think that's because it's something that really is better experienced than explained, and not because my head is like the inside of a Hoover bag, filled with so much fluff and a couple of pieces of treasure.
What I can tell you is that at last week’s Fish & Bear, I learned never to sing “Oliver”, that I could (and probably should) make my own gift wrapping paper, and that if I am to consistently write a journal, I will need to stop buying amazingly textured stationery.
Come and join us each Thursday. Will you have fun? Uhm.. maybe.

PS. Parking at MacLeods is a little random.
Street parking can become a little congested with rather ugly vehicles waiting to be fixed due to all the car repair shops on the street.
So, if you can get a ride, it might be easier.
And if not, don’t worry that the street can look like a scene from The Walking Dead; those cars aren’t dumped, they’re just waiting to be lovingly restored. 😀
