Pat On The Back
So it was St Patrick's Day on Monday. Mark and I are not particular observers of the holiday, because as the saying goes “We’re all a bit Irish on St Patrick's Day. Apart from the Scottish. We’re still Scottish.”
I do wear green obviously because I'm not a fan of the idea that you can be legitimately be pinched if not. But as for the boiled beef, that's a hard swerve.
I'm all for a celebration though - especially these days - so if you were full-on bathing your shamrocks in a bucket of Guinness, then fair play to you, as they say.
We don't all do the same thing on Paddy’s Day, or Valentine's Day, or birthdays, or anniversaries, or Christmas, or any other time, no matter what the seasonal specials in stores might proclaim. We are each of us different people traveling through different points in our lives with different perspectives.
That's why we set up Fish and Bear. When you get to hear stories from people you've maybe never even met before, it becomes completely clear that we're all in the middle of our own saga, and that the really irritating story where everyone else on the planet has their shit together, and you're just trying to keep up, isn't real. All people are brilliant and terrible, weak and strong, sublime and sometimes ridiculous -periodically all at the same time.
Last week, we learned that when it comes to first jobs, everyone objected to having been a paper boy, and though candy stripers do indeed smile, that doesn't mean they're happy. And MOST importantly, do NOT eat the hotdogs at theater concession stands.
Join us this week at Fish and Bear and you can tell a story or just sit and listen.
Maybe there'll be stories about Paddy’s Day, and maybe there won’t. Nobody knows what stories they’re going to tell ahead of time, and that, as any self-respecting wee leprechaun will tell you, is what makes it magic.
