We have one of those wee robotic vacuum cleaners at home. I say that not to boast - though if someone were to take the time to actually boast about having a wee robotic vacuum, then it might be good to listen to them, as clearly they have ‘ stuff’ going on.
We call ours, Betty, as one of the kids called her that when we first got her, and it's kind of stuck. And, as there are three guys, me and a wee hairy dog living in our house, I consider Betty a bit of a necessity - admittedly not as much of a necessity as air or access to clean water, but a necessity nevertheless. If I lived on my own, who knows, maybe I wouldn't bother.
Just so you know, this isn't a question that has at any point given me sleepless nights. But when I met a friend of late who does live alone, and she mentioned about her wee robotic vacuum cleaner, and I asked her if she found it useful, she replied, “Oh well, you know, it's company.”
And we both laughed. Me more than her though, if I'm honest. And then when I thought about it later, I didn't really laugh at all.
Because that there is a necessity. Company. Companionship is right up there in human needs with air and water. Otherwise, we’d all live in our own wee houses on the top of our own wee mountains and not converse with anyone at all.
I could give you links to all sorts of medical studies to prove my point, but I've just confessed to naming my hoover, so I've hardly placed myself here as Stephen Hawking.
What I can tell you is that there is something frankly bloody magical about when people connect. Over the weeks we’ve been doing Fish and Bear, I've loved watching great friendships develop.
Everyone walks in for their first time with that wide-eyed, “Oh ffs, what have I done?” look. Then, by about 20 minutes in, it's all forgotten, and they're completely part of a team.
In last week’s Fish and Bear, we learned that bidets are well-loved by those who have experienced them, in certain families “Hungarian Goulash” is exactly the same as Spaghetti Bolognese elsewhere, and Toronto (or ‘Trono’) can be lovely.
In the words of someone who was probably Barbara Streisand, “People need people,” which is absolutely as accurate as people who have a wee hairy dog would benefit from owning a robotic vacuum cleaner.
So, if you fancy doing something different this Thursday, come hang out with Mark and me and a team of pals you're yet to meet at McLeods.
Best,
Lynn xo
Fish and Bear is held every Thursday at 7pm.

PS. Parking at MacLeods is a little random.
Street parking can become a little congested with rather ugly vehicles waiting to be fixed due to all the car repair shops on the street.
So, if you can get a ride, it might be easier.
And if not, don’t worry that the street can look like a scene from The Walking Dead; those cars aren’t dumped, they’re just waiting to be lovingly restored. 😀
