Answers on a postcard
Hello!
I have a question. Well, more accurately, Lynn and I have a big question.
If you’ve been to Fish and Bear, you know what it is and how it makes you feel. You’d be able to say that it’s simple, and yet there’s something complex about the structure that makes it work. Maybe you'd mention that, though it feels so strangely familiar it’s not like anything you find anywhere else, and that it’s something you don’t get anywhere else. And that somehow, in a very divided world of opinions, Fish & Bear connects a group of strangers like old friends.
Lynn gets bored of me saying how I think Fish & Bear is the antidote for social media and its push of algorithmically chosen content.
Anyway, back to the question:
How do we promote Fish And Bear so that more people get to experience it?
Lynn and I have never been very good at promoting, marketing, and the like. We know that promoting and marketing are what’s needed, but in a world that seems so shouty, how do we get it out to people that these events really do make people feel better about the world?
Somewhat ironically, the most frequent answer involves using social media. So I have tried pulling up my Big Boy pants, and have been playing with Instagram, and Facebook, and LinkedIn. But uugghh! At best social media just gets me distracted, and more often than not, the barrage of rage bait and opinions make me feel distracted, divided, and frankly grubby. {Luckily, I get to go to 2 F&B antidote sessions this week.😉}
At Fish & Bear every week, the preamble that is read out contains the following phrase, “We were given story to prolong the species, because when we pass on what we’ve seen and what we know, we universally benefit from our shared wisdom.” So last night after F&B at the Parlor Room, I wondered if the readers of this newsletter might have some stories that could help us.
How do you market your stuff? How do you find out about new things that might interest you? How do you avoid driving yourself crazy with the social media circus? How do you do you?
Ok…ahem..so maybe that's more than one question. But if you have thoughts, put them in the comments, or send them to me at marktweddle@youtellyours.com, or goddamit, how about actually speaking in a call?
If all of this social media mess has got you so mad, you've resorted to go old school, and are now committed to conducting all your correspondence with squid ink and a quill, you could send a letter to:
c/o FERDLE LLC,
5632 Van Nuys Blvd
Unit 3083,
Sherman Oaks, CA, 91401
Or, of course, you can just tap me on the shoulder at Valley Hive on Thursday. Or next week, when we have a test F&B on Thursday at the Lawless Brewery in NoHo. Or of course you can pop in to our regular Tuesday at the Parlor Room.
Just don’t put it on social media. No one will ever see it there! 🤣
Mark
